Medical error is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in patients in the United States. One of the leading causes of medical error is error in thinking, or cognitive error. In this presentation, the speaker will discuss the types of decision-making employed by medical personnel and how systematic errors in judgement, or bias, affect decision-making. In addition to individual factors, team-based error is explored. Using actual clinical scenarios, the speaker will discuss strategies for both the individual and team to avoid errors and reduce their impact on clinical care.
