Drug-Seeking Patients: The Biology of Their Behavior and Why They Need Compassion

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Patients with substance use disorder and drug-seeking behaviors can be frustrating and make up a large percentage of an EMS clinician's total call volume, but how much is known about these patients? This lecture will discuss what happens inside the brain of these patients. What is the pathophysiology and neurobiology that makes up the disease of addiction? Is addiction even a disease at all? Why do they lie, cheat and steal? Are they "bad people?" What has been the trend in EMS concerning these patients? Finally, can we in EMS make a difference? Attendees are encouraged to bring their opinions and experiences to the lecture for an informative and frank talk about this special, but large, population of patients.
