This presentation will approach intubation and care of the ventilated patient from the perspective of the intensive care unit, where resources and technologies not enjoyed by EMS can provide additional insight. The somewhat controversial role of EMS endotracheal intubation will be discussed and compared to in-hospital airway management strategies.  Specific pitfalls and potential catastrophes will be explained and troubleshooting techniques provided. Evidence-based interventions shown to improve success and decrease mortality will be explored, with particular emphasis on how they can be adapted to out-of-hospital practice.
