Learning Center: EMS Giving Blood Products in the Field: Clinical Benefits, Operational Demands
Trauma patients bleed whole blood, and the leading cause of death from trauma is due to hemorrhage. Evidence demonstrates that early blood based resuscitation results in decreased morbidity and mortality, but few EMS agencies have this capability. The Southwest Texas Regional Advisory Council for Trauma led a robust multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary prehospital program to make low titer O-positive whole blood (LTO+WB) available at the point of injury. In this session, Dr. Wampler will discuss the systematic, operational, and clinical aspects of delivering this critical component of remote damage control resuscitation. He will address specific concerns about: why low titer O-positive blood, blood availability, cold chain management, administration and waste mitigation.

Learning Center: The Future of Prehospital Intubation: A Professional and Personal Perspective on the ROC Pragmatic Airway Resuscitation Trial (PART)
Already being referred to on social media as the "paramedics can't intubate trial," the Pragmatic Airway Resuscitation Trial (PART) demonstrates a statistically significant improvement in neurologically-intact survival from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, specifically with the blind insertion of a supraglottic airway versus more endotracheal intubation (ETI). A 'pragmatic' trial largely because of cost limitations, this study did not otherwise attempt to optimize cardiac resuscitation or airway management.  With this perspective in mind, how do we interpret the results of this study? Is there a way to practice evidence-based prehospital medicine but avoid taking a one-size-fits-all mentality? Do we throw out endotracheal tubes with the bathwater, or is there a more measured approach we can take to interpreting and utilizing the results of this and other data?

Learning Center: Good Documentation + Good Data Collection = Better Patient Care
How do you swim through the sea of data and analyze it in a way that actually helps your practice? Attendees will learn how documentation is turned into data that can drive protocols and improvements in patient care. Tips will be given on how to properly document to allow for good data collection. Brooke Burton will discuss how this data is turned into improvement projects which ultimately help us to provide better patient care.  You will leave with ideas of how to replicate this process for your own agency.

Learning Center: How to Keep Caring (and Avoid EMS Toxicity)
This interactive session explores the harsh reality of performing our jobs in EMS day after day, year after year. Low wages make it necessary for some to hold down multiple jobs and work long hours; others may dedicate many hours a week as volunteers to fill service gaps. This session will look at the ways these factors can affect how we treat our patients, as well as exploring associated long-term effects on providers’ emotional well-being, ways to cope, resiliency, vulnerability, and simulation training to improve our empathy, patient communication, and compassion skills.

Learning Center: What We Have Here Is a Failure to Communicate: Top Communications Tips from Great Leaders
It is impossible to be a great leader without being a great communicator.  It’s that simple, yet that complex.  EMS leaders, and leaders to be, are constantly communicating with all sorts of stakeholders and in all sorts of circumstances,    There are some constants to effective communications we can learn from great leaders. Drawing on examples from the political realm – such as Winston Churchill and John F. Kennedy – as they endeavored to unite nations or even business leaders - such as Jack Welch and Gary Vanerchuk – as they strategically lead their companies, the lessons are myriad.   In this presentation, Ray Barishansky, an EMS and Public Health professional with over 25 years of experience in the field in positions of increasing responsibility, will share the various communication secrets – such as being a great listener, reading a crowd effectively and adapting your messaging to the environment - that leaders have utilized to success.
