Babak Sarani, MD, FACS, FCCM is an actively practicing surgeon at George Washington University Hospital who holds board certification in both critical care surgery and general surgery as well as holding a Professorship at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. After completing his medical school and general surgery training at George Washington University, he completed his fellowship in trauma and critical care surgery at the University of Pittsburgh and began practice at the University of Pennsylvania where he established and directed their Rapid Response Team. His experience with program development led him to be the Founder and Director of the Center for Trauma and Critical Care at George Washington University Hospital where he was charged with obtaining the Level 1 Trauma Center designation by the ACS that the facility currently enjoys. Under his leadership, he created the trauma ICU, the George Washington University Patient Logistics Center, and a critical care transport program, which he currently directs. His research interests include rapid response systems, measurement of coagulopathy following injury, processes to mitigate risk of death following penetrating trauma.
